Product Description 

Eumulgin CO 40 is a nonionic surfactant commonly used in cosmetic and personal care products. It is derived from castor oil ( nonvolatile fatty oil obtained from the seeds of the castor bean, Ricinus communis, of the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae) ) and is primarily composed of PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil. The main functions and characteristics of Emulgin CO 40 include:

  1. Emulsification: It helps blend water and oil-based ingredients, creating stable emulsions in creams, lotions, and other formulations.
  2. Solubilizing Agent: It aids in dissolving oils and fragrances into water-based products.
  3. Stabilizer: It enhances the stability and consistency of formulations.
  4. Mildness: It is generally considered mild and suitable for sensitive skin ( in cosmetics ) 

Due to these properties, Emulgin CO 40 is widely used in products like shampoos, conditioners, facial cleansers, creams and lotions .

Product Specifications 

Composition: Emulgin CO 40 is primarily PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil.

When using Eumulgin CO 40 in a solution for spray fresheners, it's important to consider recommended usage levels to ensure both effectiveness and safety. Here are some general guidelines:

 Typical Usage Levels
- Eumulgin CO 40: The typical usage concentration of Eumulgin CO 40 in cosmetic and personal care formulations ranges from 0.5% to 5%. For spray fresheners, it's common to use a lower concentration, often between 0.5% and 2%, depending on the specific formulation and desired properties. But dependends of the fragrances . Some might need to go to 5 or even 6%

Factors to Consider
1. Solubilization Requirements: The amount of Eumulgin CO 40 needed depends on the type and amount of essential oils or fragrances being solubilized in the water-based solution.
2. Stability: Ensure the chosen concentration maintains the stability and homogeneity of the solution.
3. Safety: While Eumulgin CO 40 is generally considered safe for use in cosmetics and personal care products, it's crucial to follow recommended usage levels to avoid potential skin or respiratory irritation.
4. Effectiveness: Test the spray freshener to ensure it performs as intended with the chosen concentration of Eumulgin CO 40.

How to use 

DESCRIPTION: It is a soft white to yellowish paste.

CHEMICAL NATURE: It is a non-ionic solubilizer and emulsifier obtained by reaction between hydrogenated castor oil and ethylene oxide.

SOLUBILITY: Gives almost transparent solutions in water, ethanol, isopropanol, with essential oils and fragrance oils . With gentle heating  it can form transparent mixtures with fatty acids and fatty alcohols.

APPLICATIONS:
It is used to solubilize alcohol and/or water: Essential oils, perfume compositions, vitamins and hydrophobic active substances.

HOW TO USE IT: Homogenize the solubilizer before use.
 1- In hydro-alcoholic mixtures ( our Base for room sprays ) : Mix the fragrance with the solubilizer and dissolve it in the alcohol before adding the specified amount of water.
2-With aqueous preparations, add the water very slowly and with vigorous stirring.

STORAGE: In tightly closed containers, in a dry place, at room temperature.

Practical Steps for Formulating
1. Start Low: Begin with a lower concentration (around 0.5%) and gradually increase if necessary.
2. Test for Clarity: Ensure the solution remains clear and free from separation.
3. Check for Sensory Properties: Verify that the fragrance is well-dispersed and that the spray does not leave any residue.

Regulatory Guidelines
- Consult Regulatory Bodies -IFRA : Always check local regulations and guidelines to ensure compliance with safety and usage standards for cosmetic and household products. CHECK IFRA limits for the fragrance ( Room sprays falls into category 10B)

Example Formulation
For a Room Spray :
- Ecocandle Base for Room Spray ( here ) 
- Fragrance/Oils: 5%
- Eumulgin CO 40: 5% ( 2%-6%)

Make a tester :
If the liquid turns white than add Eumulgin CO 40 . Start with 2% and add more until it's clear .
 1.Dissolve Fragrance in Eumulgin CO 40: Mix the fragrance or essential oils with Eumulgin CO 40 until a clear solution is obtained.
2. Combine with Room Spray Base : Slowly add this mixture to Room Spray Base while stirring continuously to ensure thorough mixing and solubilization.
3. Adjust Concentration as Needed: Based on performance and clarity, adjust the concentration of Eumulgin CO 40 if necessary.
For a simple non-alchool spray freshener formulation for sheets ,pillows,ironing water  :
- Water: 90-95%
- Fragrance/Oils: 0.5-3%
- Eumulgin CO 40: 0.5-2%  ( as a starter ) 
- Preservative (like Cosgard, Sharomix ) The same percentage of Emulgin 0.5-2%
 
1. Dissolve Fragrance in Eumulgin CO 40: Mix the fragrance or essential oils with Emulgin CO 40 until a clear solution is obtained.
2. Combine with Water: Slowly add this mixture to water while stirring continuously to ensure thorough mixing and solubilization.
3. Add Preservative
3. Adjust Concentration as Needed: Based on performance and clarity, adjust the concentration of Eumulgin CO 40 if necessary.

In summary, while there is no strict upper limit, it's generally recommended to use Eumulgin CO 40 in the range of 0.5% to 6% for spray fresheners. Always test the formulation to ensure it meets your quality and safety standards.

Please do carry out your own testing to make sure your products are suitable for the product you are using them for. The Onus is is on you to make sure your products are safe to use. 

If a water spray, or any formulation with water doesn't contain a preservative, several issues can arise:

1. Microbial Growth: Without preservatives, the water spray can become a breeding ground for bacteria, fungi, and mold. This can happen especially quickly in a warm and humid environment. Contaminated water can pose health risks, including skin infections, respiratory issues, and other illnesses.

2. Shortened Shelf Life: Products without preservatives generally have a much shorter shelf life. They can spoil quickly, becoming unusable and necessitating more frequent replacements.

3. Degradation of Ingredients: If the water spray contains other ingredients (such as essential oils, vitamins, or plant extracts), these can also degrade faster without preservatives. This can reduce the effectiveness and potency of the product.

4.Changes in Odor and Appearance: Over time, microbial contamination can lead to unpleasant smells and discoloration of the water spray. This can make the product less appealing and less likely to be used.

To ensure safety and efficacy, it's important for water-based sprays to include appropriate preservatives. If you have a product without preservatives, it's crucial to use it quickly and store it in a cool, dry place to minimize the risk of contamination.

But what is a surfactant?

Surfactants are substances that have surface activity, which means that, even at low concentrations, this substance has the effect of adsorbing on its surface.

Adsorption causes a significant change in free energies at surfaces and interfaces, due to which it is possible that other substances can penetrate any object and then be effectively cleaned. In relation to water, the molecule has a heteropolar character (different polarities) due to the molecular structure, with a polar part (hydrophilic) and another non-polar part (hydrophobic) .

 The hydrophilic part is soluble in water and is generally formed by acidic or basic groups, which are responsible for the solubility of the surfactant in water. The hydrophobic part is insoluble in water and soluble in oils.

Surfactants have different polarities when in wet solution, which is why they are classified as:

  • Anionic: They have a negative charge on the hydrophilic part.
  • Cationic: Has a positive charge on the hydrophilic part.
  • Amphoteric: They produce a positive or negative charge depending on the pH.
  • Non-ionic: They do not undergo ionization, which means that in aqueous solution they do not have a charge.

Each group has its importance within the production of a healthy product, Eumulgin for example, belongs to the non-ionic group.

It is very common to see more than one type of surfactant in a product, as each one has a different role in the cleaning process.
